Employment & Training

One of the biggest impacts on a community is the ability to provide sustainable employment. We are proud of our policy of recruitment from within the communities in which we work, having examples of up to four generations of the same family work with us. The Keeley and Holland families (pictured below  left to right) have worked for Seddons for 4 generations.

The Environment

Recycling & Sustainability

We are committed to ensuring continuous consideration to the environment in all aspects of our operations, with particular regard to issues such as:-

  • Waste disposal
  • Clean air
  • Recycling
  • Energy efficiency

  • We list below some of the ‘green’ products we use in our construction process:-

  • Energy efficient condensing boilers
  • Recycled hardcore
  • Dual flush W.C. cisterns
  • Low “E” glass
  • Low wattage light bulbs
  • Use of timber from “Forest Management Certification” sources
  • Plasterboard containing recycled material
  • Pre-screened top soil from our waste station

We are endeavoring to reduce our impact on the environment through the use of innovative techniques and construction of energy efficient buildings.

We are committed to the three ‘Rs’ of Reduce, Reuse & Recycle which is reinforced through the implementation of our environmental policy.

We currently operate two recycling centres in Bolton and Liverpool where up to 88% of our construction waste is recycled.   Aspects of our waste achieve 100% recycling and we aim to replicate this success with other materials in the future.

Using our own skip wagons, waste materials from our sites in the Greater Manchester area are deposited within a fully enclosed building and the waste is sorted into inert and non-inert materials. Products such as timber, glass, brick, block and metal are extracted for recycling and salvage, thus reducing the balance of waste to be transferred to landfill sites by 88%.

On average, the facility handles 1,500 tonnes of mixed biodegradable/inert waste per month and this results in approximately 16,000 tonnes less landfill per annum.

The recycling centre in Liverpool operates as CIRCLE Liverpool Ltd.   CIRCLE is a unique joint venture initiative focused on increasing the recycling of construction waste in the Liverpool area. Leading social housing providers, The Riverside Group and plus dane group joined forces with the Seddon Group in 2006 to create CIRCLE Liverpool Ltd.

CIRCLE stands for Construction Industry Recycling Centre for the Local Environment and provides an alternative, cost effective and environmentally-friendly solution to the disposal of construction waste. The scheme also created 20 new jobs in Liverpool when it was established.

Since its inception, CIRCLE has saved 43 tonnes of CO2, diverted almost 28,000 tonnes of waste from landfill and delivered almost £70,000 of cost savings.

In 2008 CIRCLE was presented with a Highly Commended Award in the House Building Innovation 2007 Awards. The object of the awards was to recognise companies demonstrating a commitment to innovation in the house building industry.

CIRCLE, and its Seddon sister plant in Bolton, use both mechanical and manual sorting to increase the percentage of materials recycled towards its 90% target. CIRCLE’s facilities are not only available to contractors working with Riverside, Plus Dane and Seddon – over 50 contractors use CIRCLE for the disposal of construction waste in the Liverpool area.

As well as recycling construction waste CIRCLE also provides some subsidised skips to community groups to enable them to recycle their waste. This initiative aims to help not-for-profit community groups to contribute to the Government’s recycling target to halve the levels of construction waste being sent to landfill by 2012.

“We deal with over 40 deliveries of waste each day. Sifting and sorting each one by hand into numerous dedicated waste streams to ensure as little discarded material as possible finds its way onto landfill. Seddon, Riverside and plus dane have created a pioneering initiative and I’m proud of the work we do to improve our communities and wider environment.”
