Laura on Shortlist for Women in Construction Awards
Construction company Seddon is celebrating for a second time in as many months. Laura Thorpe is the second female colleague to have been shortlisted for an industry award, following in the footsteps of Maggie Heap who was acknowledged by the TPAS Connecting People Awards earlier this year.
Laura has been shortlisted for the title of Best New Starter at the prestigious Women in Construction Awards and will learn whether she has been successful in winning the title at the black tie event which is due to take place later this month. The Best New Starter category has been hotly contested with over 100 applicants being shortlisted to just six.
Says Laura: “I am delighted with this news. To be one of just six people to be shortlisted from such a large number of entries is already a major achievement and one which I will always be very proud of.”
The 25 year old joined Seddon in 2003 at the age of 19 as a trainee Quantity Surveyor (QS) She has since completed her training and now holds a full time position within the QS department where she keenly seeks out new ways to encourage more women to enter the industry; a commitment which has been influential in her success in the forthcoming awards.
Laura adds: “When I originally joined Seddon I didn’t really know much about the construction industry and have learnt everything I know whilst doing my training with the company. Now I keen to encourage more young people, especially girls, to learn more about the industry and consider it as a career option.”
Says Jonathan Seddon, Managing Director at Seddon: “Laura has demonstrated a real desire to succeed. She certainly has the drive and personality to achieve her goal and to be shortlisted for such a fantastic award is a real recognition of all the hard work she has put in to her training. We are all looking forward to the awards and wish her all the best.”
